6th May Diane Poole's Garden
On Wednesday 6th May , members of the Exploring Gardens Group enjoyed a repeat visit to Diane Poole's garden in Little Bookham. The group first visited this charming garden in October last year and were eager to see it at its springtime best.We were sadly too late for the daffodils, their skeletons still standing tall and providing structural interest -so it was especially pleasing to see the abundant bluebells in good health. We observed many bees also enjoying this native wildflower, very grateful for the nectar, and evidence in action of Diane's "wildlife first" approach to gardening.
This really is a garden that feels loved. From the moment youstep in; you're surrounded by colour, texture, and the small thoughtful details that seem to lend it a personality of its own. See, for example, the charming bird houses made from old walking boots hung on the walls!
For fans of more traditional elements; the boarders were filled with spring and early summer blooms- bright blue cornflowers catching the light, delicate columbines nodding in the breeze, cosmos glowing white against dark soil and a peony so rich and velvety it almost did not look real.
After exploring every nook and cranny, members sat down to enjoy tea, coffee and delicious cakes. A lovely end to a lovely afternoon. Funds raised in aid of The Surrey Wildlife Trust.

7th August Monks Green, Chertsey
On Thursday 7th August, the garden explorers group enjoyed a lovely afternoon visiting a beautiful garden in Chertsey. We were again blessed with good weather ... we're hoping to make it a full set of rain free garden visits in 2025! That may be indicative of climate change more than anything else - you can see evidence of the eco-friendly hands -off approach taken by owners Jose and Janice to maintaining their lawn in times of drought. Janice has also transformed an area of the garden into a dry rock garden, although she confessed to not sharing husband Jose's affection for cacti. Janice was keen to stress that the garden is at its best in spring, thanks largely to an abundant wisteria by the pond. What a gorgeous image this conjures in the mind - and the group certainly enjoyed viewing the photographs which confirm it. We have vowed to make a repeat visit to see this sight in person. Nevertheless, the flowers that are in bloom at this time of year were in splendid condition ( seemingly unaffected by the lack of rainfall ) and provided plenty of bright, cheery colour long after the spring peak has passed. Of particular note were hydrangeas, dahlias and rudbeckia.
Beyond the planting this garden boasted something to interest everyone-from the Eurasian teals who have made the small pond their home,to the pink canaries in the aviary and even a resident tortoise! Everyone was fascinated by Jose's guitar workshop, a rare chance to see up close how a skilled craftsman assembles this instrument from start to finish. The only thing we couldn't agree on was which cake was most delicious.

4th September Lower Road Garden
The Exploring Gardens Group visited Steve and Jan's garden in Lower Road. We were very lucky to have a sunny afternoon between rainy weather. This lovely garden had so many interesting parts to it including a play area, a door with a hidden room which had a secret passageway, an area dedicated to Ukraine and lots of different sculptures to name just a few. Steve and Jan made us very welcome and we finished the afternoon off with tea, cakes and biscuits with a butterfly decoration!
