Halloween Walk, Guildford
28.10.24
On an atmospheric October evening a group of Butterflies and their guests got into the Halloween spirit on a ghost walk in Guildford, which dates to Saxon times. Our professional guide was Philip Hutchinson, a life member of the Ghost Club, the oldest paranormal society in the world , founded in 1862 and having Charles Dickens as a founder member. The tour started on the cobbled High Street at Holy Trinity Church and took us on a zigzagging journey around the town, including North Street, Tunsgate, Castle Grounds and St Marys Church tower in Quarry Street 9 the oldest building in the town) plus Guildfords most haunted building. The King's Head Pub. At each stop Philip's unique style of storytelling, with props, helped bring the locations and properties histories to life, including the people who resided, visited, or were held prisoner within them, plus the many ghosts and their stories. Even the current Guildford Museum is said to have its own ghost.
We finished at the Angel Hotel where we were told about the haunting of those who stayed in room number 1, by a soldier. Even 007 Roger Moore had an encounter with a ghost whilst staying at the hotel.
Philip himself is a ghost sceptic, which surprised us all, and has yet to prove they exist, but he never says never. Although there can be rationale answers as to why some people hear bumps in the nights, footsteps, bells ringing and or see ghostly figures go through walls or appear in mirrors these cannot always be easily explained.

Butterflies Craft Evening

Wakehurst Place
05.12.24
At the end of November, 12 Butterflies did a Christmas craft evening at The Barn Hall, helped by 6 members of the BBWI craft group. There was a choice of decorations that Butterflies could make including ribbon Christmas trees, paper Angels made from music sheet paper and tree decorations such as Christmas puddings and reindeers made of felt. It was a very enjoyable evening, learning new skills and being creative, lots of chatter with tea and biscuits. A huge thank you to Marit and the craft group.

On a very wet evening the Butterflies and their guests went to Lakehurst Place ,in West Sussex for the Christmas light trail, Glow Wild. The route lit up with coloured lanterns, and you could carry a small one with you around the site, which was a nice touch. The light show theme reflected both the venue and the countryside, with one of the first installations that greeted us being a family of badgers. Installations floating on water, up in trees and on the ground, plus a field of fire torches, and a wonderful dragon were all on show. The main mansion had a spectacular Son et Lumiere display showcasing local wildlife on its outer facade. In all a magical, almost fairyland, experience enjoyed by all even if we were soaked through by the end. In 10 years, this was without doubt the wettest outing undertaken by the Butterflies. Our luck had to run out sometime.

December Meeting/ 10th Birthday
09.12.24

Our December meeting was not only our Christmas celebration but also our 10th birthday party. Many members wore Christmas or sparkly jumpers and it was a sociable evening chatting over Prosecco and nibbles. There was a Christmas quiz as well. Our President Clare, made amazing biscuits for everyone to celebrate and everyone was given a gift of hyacinth bulbs to plant at home. It was an enjoyable evening and a big thank you to everyone who helped make it a success. Happy Christmas to everyone.
